What I Learned from Titus the Tanzanian
Window into a Worldview
|
|
Recently, a Christian pastor from east Africa visited in our
area to inspect the recent printing of a Scripture portion
into his native language, Swahili, spoken by approximately 100
million Tanzanians. While he was here, Titus shared a short
message from Jeremiah chapter one (vv. 1-10). He pointed out
that Jeremiah's mission included going to the "nations" and
"kingdoms." He also described how so often the work requires
more destroying (unlearning of lies and false teaching) than
building ("root out," "pull down," "destroy," and "throw down"
- v. 10). Because the enemy has worked so effectively, we
often have twice as much clearing out and deprogramming to
perform before we can even begin to build and to plant (v.
10). When you renovate a room, you take the old stuff out;
clean, paint, repair, etc, and then put new stuff in.
Additionally, he used one of Jesus' parables (the wheat and
the tares, Matthew 13:24-43) to demonstrate that the wicked
one does much of his work while the farmer is sleeping.
"Where did all these tares come from?" asks the farmer
(Christian worker). "The enemy did it while you were
sleeping" explains the Lord of the harvest. Titus' message
was both insightful and spiritually challenging. We are
grateful he was able to speak to us from God's Word as well as
tell us about his country.
Titus' worldview is uniquely different from my own.

Missionaries Need This!
Transplanting the Gospel into Foreign Soil
|
January 21-25, 2007
At BSWE, we believe there are some very important things you
need to know before you go. And
contextualization is one of those "things." It's about
working smarter, not harder. It's about removing the
missionary's cultural baggage and understanding the reasons
why the people in this new place think and act the way they
do.
John O'Malley (WWNTBM) is providing modular instruction on
this often overlooked subject. Don't miss it! Because what
you don't know can hurt you.

A Woman's Theology |
|
Does a woman's theology matter? I think
so. But let's ask someone who is more widely known and
experienced.
Job, does it matter what the woman
nearest you believes? When a husband is hurting and in need
of comfort or encouragement; when life is hammering him; or
when God is testing him; yes, it does matter what the woman
closest to you believes. "Curse God and die!" is not what
we need to hear.
Sometimes in our humanity we all say
things we don't mean or things that are wrong and that we
just should not say. And there may always be such times in
our frailty. But for those who have not yet made the
lifelong commitment to a spouse, make this a major item on
the list: how does she view God? Does God owe her a perfect
life or a life of ease? Or, is He God and free to
accomplish His work in His way?
Whatever else may be on your list, "Things I Look for in
a Wife," make sure to put her theology somewhere near the
top. I believe that Job would say that a woman's theology
is crucial. Check it out!
