World Evangelism Minute

                                                                                                                                          December 2004

Greetings,

Twice a "Missions Inclusio" was declared at the birth of the Saviour.

The first was in the angelic announcement, "And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people" (Luke 2:10). Notice the descriptive clause, "Which shall be to all people" (emphasis added).

The second was in the words of Simeon, "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel" (Luke 2:29-32). Here, it's in v. 32, "A light to lighten the Gentiles" (emphasis added).

Luke 2:32 is a prophetic reiteration of Isaiah 42:6 and 49:6. Both of these are quoted by Paul in Acts 13:47 where he declares to the Jews in Antioch of Pisidia that he identified his sending and ministry to the Gentiles upon the authority of these Old Testament passages.

At BSWE, we have joined the Apostle Paul in claiming Isaiah 42:6 and 49:6 as the biblical basis for our ministry. All believers find their purpose in Him.

Unpacking the Gospel for the Nations

When we get ready to take the Gospel beyond "Jerusalem" and "Judea," we encounter people who need more teaching than a ten minute talk on the porch. We find ourselves confronting people who have never even heard of Jesus and have absolutely no knowledge of the Bible. Many of these people are from Communist, Buddhist, or Muslim countries and are steeped in their own dark traditions and practices. This type of evangelism requires specific training and preparation even beyond mere language-learning.

Missionaries aren't the only ones who need this training - God's people in the American church need to embrace the task of "welcoming" international students, immigrants, and refugees. These people are normally more receptive to the Gospel when they are away from their homeland, and it is our responsibility to give them a culturally relevant and reasonable presentation of the Gospel message in way that answers their arguments and brings them to the cross of Christ.

How's Business

There are two questions anybody involved in business should be able to answer. Question number one is, "What is our business?" Nobody can claim to be in business that doesn't even know what their desired product or goal is. If someone were to ask a businessman, "What do you do? What do you produce?" He could not say, "Nothing. I'm just in business."

Question number two is, "How is business?" Now that you know what your goal or desired product is, you must get an honest ysis of how production is going. Then you make the needed changes.

Now, what is your church's job? It is to get the Gospel to every people group in the world. That is question number one. How is your church doing at her job? That is question number two. Let's tackle these by proof and production.
