Greetings!

Are we called to a people or to a purpose? Are we called to a place; or are we called to a task? Are we "called to the mission field" (or a mission field)? Or, are we called to make Jesus "known to all nations for the obedience of faith" (Romans 16:26)?

Don't get me wrong - I believe in specializing and I see the need to focus. I know that the "pocket peoples" and "hidden peoples" have been overlooked. But I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about churches who drop a missionary's support when he has merely received a "Macedonian Call." We can also add to this list any of those who have had to "wipe the dust from their feet" and move to the next town; and also, those who rightfully see themselves as temporary "scaffolding" while the "building" is being built (i.e., a body of believers).

I am thinking about the need for churches to support missionaries for the purpose of their calling while not over-emphasizing the place of their calling. None of us would have dropped the Apostle Paul when he announced (if he did announce it) that he was leaving Asia to go to Macedonia. Paul had proven himself to be one who could be depended on to start churches where ever he went while listening to the Holy Spirit all along the way.

Yes, there may be missionaries who jump fields for personal reasons; but we need not lump them all into this category (we were supposed to have added them to our ministry support after a process of prayerful and careful examination).

Let's remember that the larger task is to declare His glory among all nations (1 Chronicles 16:24). It is to declare His wonders among all people (Psalm 96:3).

Recommending A Missionary

Walter Stevens

Recently, BSWE was honored to have Missionary Walter Stevens speak in our college chapel. He delivered a powerful message on missionary compassion and motivation from Romans chapter nine.

Bro. Stevens is a missionary to the Gypsy peoples of Europe. His ministry is currently located near the border of Hungary and Romania. He is a man of God who is passionate about God and the work of missions.

You can hear him speak on the subject of Prayer at First Baptist Church's World Evangelism Conference.

What's Your NEXT STEP?

Taking It Up A Notch After A Short-term Missions Trip

Begin working in a local church ministry that exposes you to ministering to people outside the walls of the church.

Stop watching television.

Eat foreign food.

Put international headlines on your home page or news reader.

Read at least one missions book per year.

Host a missionary family in your house during missions conference or throughout the year.

Develop a habit of looking at the manufacturer's tag on your clothing each day before you put it on and offer a prayer immediately for the country named on that item of clothing.

Sign up to be an international friendship partner (at a local university).

Plan and take your next family vacation to visit a missionary from your church.

Take a college class in missions or Bible.
